Spar DC II wins Corporate Charity Challenge

After four weeks of thrilling football the Moses Mabhida Outer Fields were set alight on Monday when companies played their final positional matches in the Corporate Charity Challenge.

The happiest company at the end of all proceedings was Spar DC II after they overcame LK Security 5-3 in a thrilling final.

Captain of Spar DC II Thulasizwe Zakwe and his teammates were all too ecstatic to receive their trophy after a tough 16-team contest of six-a-side-soccer.

“We’re very happy we’ve won but more than anything we’ve enjoyed ourselves since day one. Thanks so much to AmaZulu for putting this together.

“We’ve all enjoyed ourselves, playing together as brothers and friends for a good cause. We’re also grateful for Spar for involving us,” said Zakwe.

Despite the final originally earmarked to be played as a curtain raiser in the KZN Derby between AmaZulu and Golden Arrows of the Absa Premiership, spectators did not lack any entertainment. LK Security certainly gave their opponents a good run for their money.

KZN Sports & Recreation, who started the tournament like a house on fire but fell away later on, got small consolation when their teammate Phelelani Ngema was chosen as Player of the Tournament. Richman Ntuli of Spar DC II was chosen as Goalkeeper of Tournament. ENS were awarded the Fair Play Team of the Tournament.

Despite falling short of winning a single match, the ENS team and their fans remained in jubilant mood throughout the challenge by supporting and cheering for their team. Spar Head Office and Process Litho came close to challenging ENS for the team with the loudest fans.

Despite boasting Usuthu 1980s great, Joel Faya, and former Bafana Bafana winger Japhet Zwane in their line-up, AmaZulu fell into position six.

However the duo still have some brilliance about them as Zwane scored a few impressive goals despite the Usuthu Team Manager and Chief Scout being shown little mercy by their more youthful opponents.

Programs Manager Mpho Dintwa thanked sponsors East Coast Radio, ENS, Standard Bank and Independent Newspapers for their support of the Corporate Charity Challenge as well the 16 teams for taking part in the matches.
