Meet the Corporate Charity Challenge champs
AmaZulu's technical team and office staff lifted the Competitive Stream trophy in the 7-a-side Corporate Charity Challenge while Process Litho were crowned champions in the Social Stream on Saturday afternoon at Peoples Park grounds.
In a team led by Head Coach Steve Barker, Goalkeeper Coach Davies Phiri and Team Manager Japhet Zwane, AmaZulu 1 really defied the odds to emerge victors in the final after beating Gold Circle 2 on penalties 2-1.
Their hard running opponents, Spar DC 1, had scored first in the first half to take the lead but AmaZulu equalized towards the dying minutes of the match. AmaZulu had to beat last year’s champions, Spar DC 2, on penalties to book their place in final.
Process Litho put the game beyond Defy’s reach in the Social Stream final to secure their silverware as the match ended 4-1. Process Litho beat Gold Circle 1 4-2 in the semi-final.
The tournament has been nothing short of drama and excitement. Team Manager of Process Litho, Nathi Mavundla, was beaming with excitement as his colleagues posed for pictures with their trophy.
“We’re over the moon and excited because we won but more especially since this was team building of some kind.
“We’re always busy but here we got to mingle with other people as well,” said Mavundla.
Both winning teams won betting vouchers and a group’s outing at the Gold Cup Race at the Durban View Restaurant, in Greyville courtesy of Gold Circle.
Scelo Khumalo was the lucky winner of Grindrod Travel’s all expenses return ticket for two to any local destination in South Africa.
Proceeds gathered from the tournament will assist in the funding of social upliftment projects that are run by the AmaZulu Community Trust.
AmaZulu Community Trust Programs Manager, Mpho Dintwa, extended warm words of gratitude to all 16 teams that participated.
“Special thanks to our sponsors, Standard Bank, Grindrod Travels and our media partners East Coast Radio and Independent Newspapers for throwing their weight behind this initiative,” said Dintwa.
